Punching Clouds

I cannot see them
but I know that them’s there.
A mirage of mercenaries
emerge from thin air.
And, as every boxer knows,
there’s a cost to every throw.
And a hundred punches missed
can wear you like a knockout blow.

The goalposts got moved
whilst I was otherwise engaged.
And a hard won peace
is now a raging blaze.
My days! The toughest foe
are the foe you cannot see.
Smoke, mirrors and cloaks
of invisibility.

But I’m punching clouds.
Rattling sabres at the sky.
Shooting arrows underwater
at an enemy fighting shy.
I throw down a gauntlet
the ghosts all ignore.
Hoping to be haunted
Less than I was haunted. Before
I abandon this post.
Escape now
and give up the ghost
I plot somehow
anew strategy.
And time will tell
whether it'll be the death of me.

I once got arrested
for fighting with myself.
It looked so realistic
they couldn’t believe there was no one else.
But I was the champion
who walked from the ring
And the guy on the deck?
Well, he never saw it coming.

Now I’m punching clouds.
